How long have you been an artist?

I guess I have been an artist my entire life. I mean in one form or another I have always been creating something.

Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
I can’t remember my first attempts really. I guess one memory was when I was at Sunday school, I must have been 3 or 4. We made a hand print in ceramic. I thought that was pretty wild. I use to play with my matchbox cars in my grandparents dirt driveway and build elaborate cities with dirt, stones and twigs…I would just get lost out there for hours in my own little imaginary world. Those are two of my first memories of attempting to be creative.

How many hours a day do you create?
I spend endless hours creating. I am currently working on several things at once. i bounce back and forth between projects. I would say most of the day I am working.

How does creating art make you feel?
When I complete a piece I usually feel pretty Groovy about it. Some of my pieces takes weeks and even months…there is a great sense of accomplishment when I know that I placed my last dot on that piece. It feels awesome…especially since alot of the things I work on were a rescue of some sort.

How did you pick your creative medium?
When I was in 5th grade I was a terribly disruptive student. The teacher I started the year off with was fed up and asked that I be removed from her class room. I was sent to Mrs. Paige’s classroom.
She really seemed to like me even though I was rough around the edges and at times very very naughty.
She set up a table next to her desk and filled it up with paint and brushes and paper…and every day for the rest of the year I painted as she taught the class.
I discovered I liked painting very much…it was fun and strangely kept me out of trouble.

What are your inspirations?
I love colors. All colors. My Grandfather, who was the love of my life, liked to bird watch. I would go with him and he would teach me all about nature and birds. Although I paint in unnatural colors it is Nature through my Grandfathers teachings that inspire me and the birds…some very colorful, some dotted and some hidden in the leaves.

How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
iI have a friend Kevin Conkin who is an extraordinary artist…he went to school for it and has been a working artist his whole life told me…that when I hit a wall…just keep painting anyway. So, I took his advice.
When I hit a wall I take that time to do a ton of prep work…sanding, mending, priming and painting everything solid black…I get it ready so when Creativity strikes…I am ready!

“What is Art?” is certainly too big of a question to ask here, but what do you hope your audience takes away from your art? What statement do you hope to make?
What gives you hope in the world?
I hope that when somebody looks at one of my pieces that they get lost…I hope the touch it and feel every dot. The texture is part of appreciating it.
I don’t know what statement I want to make…I think being that I use discarded pieces to create…I hope I am making people think about all the things they discard that they could have salvaged and made awesome again.
What gives me hope? My daughter Reagan gives me a great deal of Hope. She is a really good kid with big brown eyes who sees everything in such a positive way…
What are your artistic goals?
My Artistic goals…I guess I would like to cover the planet in dots! or at least I dream it!
I never really thought about artistic goals…

What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
My most exciting moment was when I had a piece accepted into the Danforth Museum Members show 2009. that was wicked cool. It was pretty cool having a piece I took out of a dumpster and painted for 3 months on display with so many other great artists. It was then that I accepted that I was an Artist.

How have you handled the business side of being an artist?
I have a tough time with the business side. I really do. I tend to be quite personal and have a hard time taking off my Pearle♥ skin and throwing on my professional suit.
I am a very disorganized human being. I create in absloute madness and chaos. It is a miracle that I have been able to keep all my Business together. I need to get better at the business aspect…I am a work in progress. I have only been selling online since January 2011. I am still new to this whole scene.

What has your experience as an artist been like on Etsy?
I Love Etsy. I dig the whole site and the community aspect. i am so down w/ it. I think as an artist Etsy has been incredibly easy to use and it has made me a bit more confident in my work.

What advice can you give new artists on Etsy?
I think I would tell a new artist that they should check out the teams and try to get involved. I feel a lot of good comes when you are active in your shop and w/ other Etsians.
Where else on the internet can we find your work besides Etsy?
