Friday’s featured STATTEAM SPOTLIGHT featured artist is Martha Preble from ArtfulHummingbird her shop is full of delightful jewelry sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face this holiday!

I’ve used lovely moonstone and Swarovski crystals to bring these simple sterling silver chandeliers to life. Flashes of color from the natural iridescence of the stones, plus the “auorora borealis” crystals, brighten these earrings. You can toss these on with jeans or wear them out to an evening event – these earrings are great.

Saturday Salute to Etsy Texas Artisans

Tonight I wanted to do something special for all my Texas neighbors on Etsy.com
I was not born in Texas, but spent my early childhood growing up in Midland until I married and relocated to Rankin, Texas. If you look Rankin up on Google, you will see that its a TEENY, TINY desolate area that is home to around 500 people, including yours truly. So, to all my Etsy friends who live in Texas, this wonderful Christmas Salute for Saturday night is for you!

I am going to start of this Christmas feature with a well known saying: “Everything is BIGGER in Texas” and I can tell you that when it comes to Texas Artisans, the enduring charm of cowboy culture goes above and beyond!

My first featured artist is from Killeen, Texas; KayzKreationz. This shop is full of Stained Glass Mosaics, Art Glass, Fused Glass, Beaded Bookmarks, Wire Jewelry and more. One item I fell in love with this Mosaic Stained Glass Bird-feeder! Featured in Birds and Bloom magazine, her bird feeders have TEXAS size style! Looking for a unique birdfeeder for your garden or as a gift for a gardening friend? This is it. It is a mosaic birdfeeder with stained glass, set in grout. It is 8 1/2″ across the top from rim to rim. It has a yellow star, blue and white bluebonnet and mosaic Texas as it’s design. Sure to attract lots of birds to your yard and lots of looks from all your envious neighbors. Have a unique Birdfeeder for your garden that’s not like every other feeder in the stores and people’s yards. This birdfeeder could also be used as a small birdbath in your yard, if you like. The grout has been sealed, but is safe for the birds.

Corpus Christi is home to my next featured shop GirlieGals who offers you sparkle and shine Texas style! What would make a better gift for someone special than this Gold Pandora Christmas Bracelet with Poinsettia Charms, to tempt you even more, this bracelet is on sale! Price reduced by over 20% Dec. 3rd only. Free gift with this purchase!
Extremely beautiful – these pandora style gold plated crystal studded beads and clear crystal faceted beads will dazzle all on their own. Then add the lovely poinsettia and gold plated fluted round bead charms and you have a bracelet that’s not only stunning but is also very sparkly and brilliant. It’s a Bling Thing! Each charm hangs from an antique gold tube bead and has a dangling silver lined red seed bead for extra shine.

My next featured artist quidditydesigns is in Georgetown, TX. Her shop is full of beautiful Texas style flair like this Copper Flower Pendant Necklace with White Freshwater Pearls and Silver. Five softly burnished copper petals surround three pistil/stamens made of white freshwater pearls on fine silver headpins. The copper flower is about 1.75 inches, so it makes a statement. I made the necklace long so that it would fit over a turtleneck sweater.

I think Killeen Texas must be a popular place to reside, another resident from there is jdfootloose. It doesnt usually get too cold in Texas so her items are perfect for the winter months, like this Autumn Patchwork Scarf! A great Autumn statement piece. Crocheted in multi colored & Golden yellow yarn in various size squares to give it a patchworl look.

Houston, Texas is home to my next featured artist BirdsBeadsTX, her shop is full of delightfully fun jewelry! Check out this great necklace made up of matte, faceted black beads and printed shell tiles in orange, blue and silver with a toggle clasp closure. It measures approx. 34 inches in length.

My next featured artist is from Dallas, Texas. Her shop is full of TEXAS style home decor that will warm up your home or that special someones heart! This Personalized Family Name Sign, Last Name Sign, Wall Art with Photo would make a perfect gift for that hard to buy for person! Beautiful personalized wood sign includes photo, first and last name, and optional established date. Medium and dark brown in color, sign is painted front and back in satin brown. Made of solid pine with decorative routed edge, Sanded edge adds detail and a vintage look and Sealed with a textured coating to protect and preserve the print. Saw-tooth hanger included, no vinyl used!

Here is a town I have never heard of! Bastrop, Texas; home of my next featured artist NMCJewelryDesign. Feather earrings are all the rage this season, surprise your BFF or that special someone in your life with these beautiful Wild Turkey Feather earrings! We don’t usually see turkeys this way, especially during this time of year..and especially wild unadulterated ones…for their beauty. These are feathers from a wild turkey and have been cleaned and assembled into an amazing set of earrings. The pattern looks near that of a tiger with the black and orangey brown stripes. They are topped off with a tigers eye gemstone and black crystal just waiting for you to show your wild side. Due to the natural materials (and the fact that the feathers were discovered on a walk) these are truly one of a kind.

Victoria, Texas, a town I have actually been to is home to RomanticThoughts. Dazzling Texas style jewels to dazzle your special someone with this Christmas! The glass Blue and Green Pendant is the centerpiece of this unique creation. The necklace is comprised of Blue and Green Swarovski crystal beads. This striking piece is designed to be noticed.

Texas is actually wine country, a great many wonderful wines are produced in Texas, who knew?! This brings me to a great Etsy shop CorkyCrafts from Fort Worth Texas. This shop has some very unique Texas style gifts that will delight even the hard to please! This wreath makes a nice gift for the wine connoisseur in your life! It is like a wine lover’s scrapbook of happy memories. It is very versatile, add a pillar candle or a vase of flowers for a lovely centerpiece. It is a great way to extend a warm friendly welcome for visitors and neighbors in a entry way, dining area, bar, Tuscany themed kitchen, and makes a great gift idea for those who love wine! Compare prices and save by purchasing it here!

Next is my very own leadeer from my Etsy team “STATTEAM”, she is responsible for the huge success of “The STATTEAM Spotlight” which runs Monday-Friday, she does an amazing job! Lubbock, Texas is home to BeckyHelmerDesigns. Her shop is full of Texas style beauty, like this Red Flower Ring! It is adjustable so it would make the perfect gift for practically anyone on your holiday shopping list!

Last but not least brings me to little ol’ me, based here in Rankin, Texas is this hot pink bangle with zebra print crosses. A TEXAS style statement piece that is sure to get some “Yee Haw’s” when you give this as a gift!
This gorgeous bracelet is a OOAK, you wont ever bump into anyone else wearing a bracelet exactly like this one! I started with a wooden bangle an applied 4 coats of Hot Pink paint, applied crosses that I created from polymer clay and then hand detailed the zebra print. For a finishing touch I added brilliant and dazzling rhinestones and a clear coat gloss to waterproof this lovely creation. This would make a wonderful gift to give someone special or to keep for yourself!

I would like to send a big ol’ Texas hug to all of ya’ll out there!

Peace, Love & Hippie Chic Jewelz

My interview with STATTEAM’s Leader Marge Mills form Personal Designz:

Who or what had the greatest influence on you as you developed as an artist?
I would say that Cougar Armstrong had a lot to do with my love for wire wrapping. She does some beautiful work.

How would you characterize your work?
My work is best described as my imagination at work. Everything I do comes from ideas in my mind. Things I see will trigger an idea, but most are just ideas that come to me when I see the stone I will be working with.

Describe your workshops for us: My workshop is on the second floor of our home. i have a loft area that is my private world. I have my computer section, my art section with my easel and paints, and then my jewelry design section. I have an old nail table from the shop I owned that I use and have equipted it with my ott lite magnified swivel glass. I am fortunate enough to have the space for my personal area.

What’s the hardest part of being an artist?
The hardest part of being an artist is not knowing if someone is going to love your work as much as you do. It is that way with my paintings also, I am so afraid to let people see them and then if they love them it makes my day…

What’s next in your art career?
My next project is to paint some Florida type paintings. Someone has requested that I do that, My problem is that I dont want to paint just the ordinary type pictures, I like to capture a feeling, or look, or color scheme. So, I have to take time to decide exactly what I want to paint. My next work as far as designing jewlelry is most likely going to be chain maille. To me it looks so uniform and neat and I love the way the rings join together to make a pattern. I havent done it yet, so that may be the next to tackle…..

How many hours a day do you create?
I still do color work 2 days a week, just my older clients that I have known for over 20 years. Color is an art, especially if you are a colorist. I make up the formulas that I use to get the colors that they want to have. I spend the other days creating jewelry. I need to devote a few hours a day to the Team business and to my commitments to the other teams I am on. Then some time to family but the rest of the time is creating. Even when I am not sitting there physically working, I am designing in my mind. I have dozens of little pieces of paper where an idea has come to me and I put it down on paper so I wont forget it.

How does creating art make you feel?
Creating art makes me feel energized. It makes me feel alive. Like I have done something that will leave my mark on the world, whether it is a painting or a piece of jewelry I have been commissioned to design, I feel as if it is my private contribution to the world.
How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall? I make myself leave the table, go do something with a friend or family members and not think of it until I can do it calmly. Then when I go back to the table, I am relaxed and ready to solve the problems I was having with concentration.

“What is Art?” is certainly too big of a question to ask here, but what do you hope your audience takes away from your art? What statement do you hope to make?
What gives you hope in the world? Art is the way in which each person interprets what they feel inside. I had to paint wolves for a dear friend, I don’t do animals, so I dreaded it. I studied pictures of wolves, looked at statues of wolves. and finally I saw one that had a father, mother and baby wolf. The way the mother wolf was looking at the baby wolf was so inspiring. I painted a Male wolf standing majestically in a side view with the Female wolf laying over its back with a look of total adoration on her face. Wolves mate for life, I never knew it until Donna, my friend, told me. So that inspired me to paint the picture. Art is that inspiration, that interpretation of those feelings. In my jewelry, it comes from the same place. My favorite thing to do, and I do it quite often, is to redesign pieces for people. I take old gems, or pieces of jewelry and redesign them into new wire wrapped pieces. When they love that piece that I have created, that feeling that I get is what art is all about. I know that they will now have that gem that belonged to a mother, or grandmother, and be able to enjoy it because of a design that I created. That gives me hope in the world. That feeling of happiness for both the client and myself.

What are your artistic goals?
My artistic goals are to learn everything that I can about every aspect of jewelry design. I see so many things I would like to do. I have so far done beading, wire wrapping, metal clay, polymer clay, chain-work, and something I invented called Free Form wire wrapping. There are still many types of jewelry design to try yet. In painting i have done watercolor, acrylic, and oils, but there are different ways to use each, so I want to explore each one in different ways other than the ones I have tried so far.

What has your experience as an artist been like on Etsy?
My experience here on Etsy so far as an artist has been to see other artists designs that have inspired me to want to learn more….

What has been your most exciting moment as an artist here on Etsy?
My most exciting moment as an artist was to see what a former team mate did with Chain Maille. Her shop is Metallace and she is the best I have ever seen at it. She made me want to learn how in a majorly big way.

How have you handled the business side of being an artist?
I was in business over half of my life as manager and owner of a salon. So it carried over into my jewelry business. It comes naturally to me and even though some of the computer stuff was intimidating to begin with, I learn fast, so I will tackle it as it comes. I am still learning….

What advice can you give new artists on Etsy?
My advice to new Etsy artists is to network. network, network. If you dont make yourself known on Etsy, you wont make it and the best way is to make friends, lots of friends. Make treasuries, promote others, it will come around full circle to you in time. If you dont network, you will be a little fish in a big pond and never ever get anywhere.
I have a Facebook page, a Blogger page, a Wix page and for those in my area, I have jewelry in a down town Melbourne shop called Karen and Friends. I also have a WordPress blog at personaldesignz.wordpress.com/

Where else on the internet can we find your work besides Etsy?

What is the name of your Etsy shop and link? I have 2 shops, JewelryFindingz (www.Etys.com/people/JewelryFindingz) that is jewelry supplies and PersonalDesign(www.Etsy.com/people/PersonalDesignz) which has my jewelry designs.

How long have you been an artist? I have been designing jewelry for about 5 years now, and selling for 4 of them. I started after being invited to a jewelry party. I looked at some of the pieces and after thinking about it, realized that they couldn’t be that hard to make. So, a trip to the local jewelry supply and i started. i took one wire wrapping class but got very bored with that design fast and just went with what was in my mind. I am a retired hair colorist of 45 years and also I oil paint, so I guess I have arts in my blood…..

How long have you been an artist?
I would say all my life but I really hit up the bead scene about 12 years ago

Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.

Other than that painting I did when I was 1 year old…LOL…My Mom turned me on to stitching, sewing, crocheting and tole painting when I was in Jr. High

How many hours a day do you create?

Gee, kind of comes in waves. Since I teach, summer, and holidays are my prime times…how I wish it could be daily.

How does creating art make you feel?

I get a fulfilled feeling…I may have made something that I will never post but that I made it, and that I can take 100% credit for it, whether fantastic or flop, it just feels good to know that it is something that came from my hands.

How did you pick your creative medium?

I guess I have the cliche “starving college student” story, but I have always had an eye for detail and lots of color and beading has all that rolled into one

What are your inspirations?

Just about anything…I like different cultures, multi-color, classic, chic, and different…all those things come at me at once and I pluck what is most impressionable and go from there

How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
I actually like to watch a lot of cooking shows and the colors I will see in foods may spark me to want to design something after that food. As many will notice in my shop, a lot of my items have names that are closely connected to edible items! LOL

“What is Art?” is certainly too big of a question to ask here, but what do you hope your audience takes away from your art? What statement do you hope to make?
What gives you hope in the world?

Wow, well I guess I hope that when people see my work, they see that it is a piece that was made with many things in mind that was designed exclusively for them…if that makes sense. Basically, my pieces are designed for anyone and everyone, I make because I can and I like to add a twist to call my own and if you appreciate that’s great, if not, my Mother will get it for a Christmas, Mother’s Day, or Birthday gift cause she likes ALL of it! LOL

What are your artistic goals?
Artistic goals: One day to actually make jewelry from scratch, whether that means going into metal smithing, designing a glass bead, or anything that can allow me to legitimately say that “I MADE THIS WHOLE THING”
My husband’s goal for me: to be able to do this full time cause I seem to be a more whole person

What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?

Most exciting was being able to wait last minute to get wedding jewelry for myself, when it dawns on me “Hey! I can make it myself” LOL the little things…

How have you handled the business side of being an artist?
I am really trying to grasp the business side. I opened my shop in April of 2010 and not until this summer did I really put myself out there. Etsy makes it rather easy but I haven’t grasped a dollar amount that I must commit in order to really see my shop take off, but in all honesty, it’s not about the money, it’s about the creativitiy.
What has your experience as an artist been like on Etsy?

What advice can you give new artists on Etsy?

Reach out to others that share in your craft…if I have learned anything in education that can be bridged over to crafting, beg and borrow. True crafters have a sharing heart and will have no problem helping you out. Also, suck it up and spend that full night on Etsy and just hunt and look around, there are tips and treasures around every corner!

Where else on the internet can we find your work besides Etsy?
Etsy is the only spot. I have photos on Flickr and my FB page but Etsy is where the shop is.

Keeping it Weird

Have any of you ever read the Etsy pages of KEEP IT WEIRD? Well, this month I have created a challenge for my Etsy team “STAT TEAM”

****************August Snakeskin/Reptile Skin Challenge**************

My team members were challenged to create an item for their Etsy shop that includes either snakeskin or another reptile skin.
My first contestant entry came from DragonPop:
Rainbow Serpent Poppyrock Ring
My inspiration for this simple yet classy little ring was one of my favorite flowers, the poppy. This is one of my favorite looks I’ve created. I was trying to simulatehe reflective quality of snakeskin done my way 🙂 I used striking jewel tones in the flower and in the crystal I chose for the center. It is set on a lead-free, silver-plated, adjustable ring base. The diameter of the face is 1 1/2″.
*This ring base, though adjustable, is a more comfortable fit for a slender ring size. I would not try to wear it larger than a 7 1/2 or 8.
