Why buy handmade?

Why buy handmade? I have asked some of Etsy’s most talented artists on why as consumers we should buy “HANDMADE”, what you read will not only make sense, but put into practice can make a huge difference not only in the economy, but also for the enviorment.

The main reason that I choose to buy handmade is simple, Buying handmade is better for the environment, plain and simple. The accumulating environmental effects of mass production being a major cause of global warming and the poisoning of our air, water and soil. Every item you make or purchase from a small-scale independent artist or crafter strikes a small blow to the forces of mass production. To me, its just an enviromentaly sound choice.

Here is what KelliWorthDesigns from Etsy said about buying handmade:

I made a conscious decision a couple years ago to only shop and eat local. I am a locavore!!! In turn I also believe that anything handmade by a fellow artisan is still…local! We are all a community in and of ourselves. Buy local and handmade….hormone free, free range….lolol

tarnishedandtrue on Etsy had this to say about buying handmade:

Because Handmade is the most unique and beautiful! I am so sick and tired of commercial product. Blah, Target, etc…blah! And….thrifting is not what it used to be with everyone and their dog combing through the stores! So…the only way to find truly unique items is to buy handmade these days.

When I asked Junkitlove from Etsy why she chooses handmade:

Because I refuse to believe the whole population of the world is a sheep, we all need something that ‘talks’ to us and us alone, buying handmade makes that possible. Because as much as possible and when we can afford to, handmade is an ethical choice, often (not always) when wer’e buying mass produced we are funding sweatshops.
I want people to buy MY handmade because I want to buy my family a house, because I want to always be able to work doing what I love, because I would go horribly mad in a bad way if I wasn’t able to create and know someone somewhere is getting pleasure or joy out of something I have made, just for them.

Kearl on Etsy had this to say:

Because it reminds you that EVERYTHING from supplies to finished products is there because of real human beings with lives and families who deserve fair pay for their work. Think globally, act locally and you will see the difference your dollars can make. Because a unique, handmade gift is incredibly meaningful. The giver had to look carefully through thousands of items for that special item that said “I must belong to the person you love, please bring us together!”

Here is what mojo3777creations on Etsy has to say about supporting handmade:

I love to buy handmade because it is more personal. I like the connection I feel with the artist who actually made the item I am purchasing. I know my item has been made with love and it gives me the opportunity to connect with an individual through their art. You can learn a lot about a person through their art.

My interview with Junk it Love’s artist Donna Carter

One of my favorite Etsy shops is Junk it Love, there you will find art, jewelery, home wares, sculpture, glass etc. There is an adult theme to a lot of her items. Donna loves to design & create beauty using upcycled & reclaimed materials.

Here is my interview with Donna:

Tell us your personal name, business name, website and location?
My personal name is Donna, my really really personal name, the one my wife calls me, I’m not telling! My business name is Junkitlove, born out of the fact I love taking other peoples junk and turning it into something lovely again :-). My website is http://www.junkitlove.co.uk, I live in Hampshire, UK, near the New Forest with my computer boff wife, handsome yet terminally lazy son Beau, a blind dog with bat ears, a stinky sometimes white dog who talks by grunting, burping and farting, a bad tempered black cat and some small fish who have been begging for quite some time to have their tank cleaned.

What is your studio or workspace like, and how do you work in your studio?

It’s like the kind of place my mum would describe as a bombsite lol! I have a fab desk that was a dining table, it’s been modified by my wife to work perfectly for me, I love it, it’s my own personal spot of heaven. It’s in a bay window at the front of the house, facing the street so I can have a nose at the world going by with the TV on behind me so I have some ‘company’ while I work.

How would you describe and think of your style, what kind of jewelry do you make and what type of materials do you prefer?
Eclectic. That is such a difficult question to answer. It depends on which part of my character is feeling strongest on any given day. Sometimes my style is a bit dark and kinky, other times I’m all happy hippy rainbow. I’m a person of extremes. Whatever material I’m using is the one I love best, but the one I go back to again and again is glass, it’s amazingly versatile and pictures never do it justice.

What new directions do you hope to move in the future? Do you have big plans, new ideas or designs you will be exploring soon?
I’d love to say I have a plan mapped out but other than earning a living and buying a home the rest is a mystery and an adventure!

How do you work during the day in your studio, and what keeps you inspired and motivated?
I tend to have about half a dozen coffee’s then start my day as my teeth start to chatter :-). I work in short bursts of about 20-30 mins most of the time due to the attention span deficit lol, then I go do cleaning, chat online, go to the shops, fuss the dogs etc…oh and more coffee. Everything inspires me, from the beautiful shimmer of oil in water (it should be ugly but it isn’t), a want to use what others see as rubbish to transform it into something those same people would want, to other peoples fantastic art and design, I’m always inspired by creative people.

I noticed you work with many medias, using rubber, glass, wire and others. Do you create one piece from start to finish, or do you create various components and then the piece grows to completion separately?

It’s quite unusual for me to stick to one thing until it’s complete, with the exception of rubber pieces for some reason. I have the teeny weeniest attention span and even less ability to sit still long enough to finish something in one go! Generally I start with an idea of what I want to create and then over days it changes itself into something totally different lol! I have at least half a dozen things on the go at once, from paintings to mosaics, jewels to sculpture etc

Are there things that you enjoy and do often without putting it off, and other things that aren’t your favorite and you delay doing them?

I never put off creating. I love it when everyone else has left the house and I can concentrate on letting my brain spew out all over my desk. I avoid any kind of organisation or ‘grown up’ behaviour at all costs, the word procrastination in that regard was invented just for me. For example, for every 1 thing you see in my shop there are at least 20 more waiting to be listed, but that means sitting for hours and then finding the words to describe things properly, it’s important to me that if something I’ve made has a story from my mind I share it, it’s a bit like torture trying to put into words what I’ve made.

What sort of things do you prefer making and creating, what comes easily to you?
I’m a contrary annoying creature, I like to make things as difficult for myself as possible. To try new things, get a handle on that and then move on to the next thing. Working with glass is the one thing I find quite easy and I can disappear into that for hours at a time, a relief for someone who can’t stick at one thing for very long.

What are the things you consider most important to do for your business and your creativity?
For my business it would be to be nice to my wife lol! Without her nagging (sorry, encouraging) in the background and actively doing most of the photography, listing other than descriptions, driving me around so I can look in peoples rubbish etc I wouldn’t be able to get on with the business of planning, thinking, drawing, designing and ultimately making.

What would you recommend for others who may just be getting started?
Ooo that’s a hard one, for creativity I would say ‘just do it’, anything, whatever so long as you are physically ‘doing’ then you won’t seize up! Getting started in a business sense, I would say be determined, do research, listen to anyone and everyone, don’t give in at the first hurdle, there’s gonna be many many hurdles but if you work hard and have ‘something’, you will get where you want to be eventually.

Thank you Donna for this fantastic interview!!!

My adventure with Kefir Grains

About a month ago I saw a beautiful photograph of an item in my friend Andrea Scott’s Etsy shop, Story Book Artifact:http://www.etsy.com/shop/StorybookArtifact?ref=seller_info
This beautiful picture piqued my curiosity and I had to read exactly what was in this sweetly decorated jar… I clicked on this item and it read “Kefir Grains”… All aside, I am a hippie and I will take the natural route when it comes to healing rather than the standard “Better living through chemistry” prescription drugs, however I had NEVER heard of kefir Grains, ever.
Now I am intrigued after reading her item description for these “kefir Grains”:

“In comparison, Kefir grains are unlike pricey probiotic capsules generally found at most health food stores because of it actually being a LIVING organism. Meaning that it regenerates itself and grows along with you and your family for many generations to come: way beyond the years of a family pet. ;o)~

Kefir is full of beneficial bacteria that aids as a natural probiotic for your intestinal flora, and thereby builds up your body’s immunity. It has been found that kefir is an effective immune stimulant and antimicrobial against a wide variety of harmful gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Composed of around 400 strains of beneficial bacteria found in the intestines, kefir’s microbes serve as a natural clean-up crew for your intestines, and are essential for the proper absorption of many vitamins and minerals. Kefir also has an abundance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. Some of the more noteworthy of these are calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin B2, and B12, vitamin K, A and D. Tryptophan, an essential amino acid found in kefir, has been found to have a relaxing effect on the nervous system.

The heirloom kefir grains of mine produce abundant amounts of kefir product; unlike most batches available today. These grains shall produce a wonderful kefir in either Goat or Cow’s milk.”

So now the wheels are turning in my brain, why have I never heard of this before and what are the benefits of these Kefer Grains? I had to investigate this further and was very surprised and excited about what I had found out about these wonderful grains!

Kefir, the miracle food, is known as a superb probiotic source. With rich probiotic content, it automatically has a positive effect on our bodies. Kefir and Kefir grains have been around for centuries and centuries back, and all for a good reason.

If I have your curiosity peaked, I am sure the first question you will have would most probably be the exact one I had….”What does it taste like?” and “I wonder if I can drink this stuff…” I can tell you that I was surprised when I mixed my first drink with a dash of real vanilla extract, lavender honey and some splenda (yes, I like SWEET anything!) and chilled it for about an hour… it does have a slight tart taste but it reminded me of those little “Pro-biotic yogurt” drinks you can buy from the store, truth be told, this actually tasted better! I have even gone as far as to make smoothies with this, adding everything from mango’s, banana’s and strawberry’s! My kids, they LOVE Kefir Grain smoothies, I do, too!

If you suffer from any of the ailments I listed and you have about given up hope that anything will help you, I say give Kefir Grains a try, what do you have to lose?

If your thinking about trying them, visit Story Book Artifacts shop and Convo (message) Andrea, she is a wonderful and sweet young woman who is just a pleasure to do business with!

Andrea’s Etsy shop is filled with hand-crafted greeting cards, loose leaf tea blends, all-natural storybook-themed cookies, original drawings, sketches, and paintings, personalized storybook portraits on canvas, and probiotic heirloom kefir grains.
I will post a slide show of some of the delightful items I have found in her shop.

Upcycled Tie fits me to a “T”!

Being the Hippie Chic I am, my style is geared toward Up-cycled, Eco-friendly and handmade items. To me, a handmade item is worth a hundred times more than anything I can buy at a department store. In my ventures on Etsy I have come across some very talented artists who have created some of the most amazing items that I ADORE!  One such is from Red Hen Studios on Etsy, a SWEET  OOAK Upcycled Double Necktie Scarf Belt in Pink, Purple and White. Yes, this is totally right up my alley, it screams “HIPPIE CHIC STYLE” and is the hottest new fashion rave among many of my Etsy friends.

Red Hen studio has more than just up-cycled stylish finds, vintage books, patterns, household goods and jewelry are just some of the fabulous finds you will see when visiting their Etsy shop here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/RedHenStudios and also check out their blog site: http://redhenstudios.blogspot.com/2011/03/in-irish-mood.html
